Deepest-Ever Mantle Rock Samples Unveiled

A record-breaking drill into the Atlantic Ocean's mantle has yielded a 1,268-meter rock sample, offering a new look at Earth's deep layers. Extracted from the Atlantis Massif, this green-marble-like rock reveals insights into the mantle’s role in crust formation. The findings, published on August 8, highlight the significance of these samples for understanding Earth’s geology. However, future research faces uncertainty as the International Ocean Discovery Program concludes and the JOIDES Resolution is retired.
