New research in mice reveals why mosquito bites make some people itch more. The study, published in Nature, identifies a specific T cell type, GD3, and its cytokine interleukin 3 (IL-3) as key to the itch response. IL-3 primes sensory neurons to react to allergens, intensifying itchiness. Mice lacking GD3 cells or IL-3 showed reduced itching. This discovery could lead to new treatments for chronic itch disorders.
